Patricia Brown

Sabine Soil and Water Conservation District, Louisiana

Patricia (Patti) Brown of Hornbeck, Louisiana, is the Sabine Soil and Water Conservation District board supervisor. Her involvement with the SWCD began in 2020 when she was asked to become a district supervisor after she and her husband decided to change from grazing their land to slowly turning it around and returning it to nature. It pushed her outside of her comfort zone and placed her in a position to lead her community forward with conservation efforts.

At first, Patti wasn't sure about participating in this year's NGLI cohort, but she decided to try and see what it could offer her. Since becoming a cohort member, she has developed a connection with the other members, past and present. The exchange of ideas with her NGLI classmates has opened her eyes to opportunities she hadn't considered for her district before joining, and she hopes to return home with new enthusiasm and inspire other members of her district to take action and get the Sabine County SWCD more involved with their community to inform them about the conservation work they do and the value they bring to the local area.

Patti and her husband enjoy working on wood projects when not out on the land. In fact, during their kitchen remodel, they did all the woodwork themselves, including their kitchen cabinets and table. They have also helped their kids complete woodworking projects, including a river table for their son and daughter. Patti and her husband were very honored to have recently been chosen as their district's farmers of the year.
