Sierra Soil and Water Conservation District, New Mexico
Sharon Luna from Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, is involved in the Sierra Soil and Water Conservation District as the appointed supervisor for Sierra County. She sees the vital impact conservation has on her daily life and got involved in conservation because of its importance. Over the past 20 years, Sharon’s district has suffered from severe drought. This impact on her district has pushed her to get involved at the national level in efforts to bring new ideas back there. Through this program, Sharon hopes NGLI can help her share her story and strengthen her speaking skills.
In New Mexico, Sharon and her husband own an insurance agency and a feed store and run a small herd of cattle. She has always been passionate about politics and legislation. Through Sharon’s insurance agency, she works with ranchers and farmers whose livelihoods have been directly impacted by conservation. She works to protect the land for future generations, including her grandchildren. “I want to see our grandchildren and their grandchildren do what we love to do,” she shared.
Sharon and her husband enjoy spending time outdoors hunting, fishing, and camping. As a member of the Chaisa Cowbells, commerce board and fair board, Sharon spends her time getting involved in her community and helping others.
